SOUTHWEST CROSS

In Southwest Cross, JChadima constructs a highly personal vision of the American Southwest, transforming the landscape into a field of geometric order, saturated colour, and symbolic resonance. Rather than describing a particular place, the painting distils the experience of landscape into an imagined environment in which mountain, water, earth, and sky become elements of a larger visual language.

The composition is dominated by a monumental cruciform structure whose dark, emphatic contours establish an almost architectural framework. This geometry divides and simultaneously unifies the surrounding landscape, creating a tension between the constructed and the organic. Within its boundaries, layered mountains and bands of terrain unfold in intense blues, violets, greens, ochres, and oranges. The compressed perspective and heightened palette move the work away from naturalistic representation and toward abstraction, allowing colour itself to carry much of the painting’s emotional force.

At the intersection of the cross, a luminous circular form becomes the compositional and psychological center of the work. Suggestive of the sun, it radiates against the surrounding orange field while also functioning as an abstract emblem. From this central axis, a vertical passage of blue descends through the lower portion of the painting, evoking flowing water and establishing a symbolic connection between the celestial and terrestrial realms.

The cross itself remains deliberately open to interpretation. It may suggest spirituality, orientation, intersection, or the human impulse to impose structure upon the immensity of the natural world. Yet JChadima avoids prescribing a single reading. The symbol operates as both image and organizing principle—a point at which landscape, geometry, and contemplation converge.

A defining quality of Southwest Cross is this negotiation between opposites: geometry and nature, stillness and movement, containment and expansiveness. The painting’s strongly delineated forms impose order, while its undulating strata of mountains, water, and earth resist that order through rhythm, colour, and movement.

Ultimately, Southwest Cross is less a depiction of the Southwest than an evocation of what landscape can represent internally. JChadima transforms the natural world into a contemplative space in which physical geography becomes psychological and symbolic terrain. The result is a work concerned not simply with seeing nature, but with locating oneself within it—and with recognizing the sense of mystery, connection, and quiet transcendence that can emerge from that encounter.
