About the artwork
RESILIENCE
In Resilience, JChadima transforms an intensely personal experience into a broader meditation on endurance, vulnerability, and the persistence of life. Conceived in 2025 during the artist’s treatment for a fourth cancer diagnosis, the painting emerged from a period defined by uncertainty, physical hardship, and an unavoidable confrontation with mortality. Yet the work does not dwell on illness. Instead, it turns toward survival and the determination to continue.
The composition is built from enlarged organic forms that fold, overlap, and rise through one another. Soft whites and pearl greys are interrupted by passages of luminous yellow-green and concentrated violet. These bursts of colour appear almost to emerge from within the quieter forms, creating a visual tension between darkness and illumination, fragility, and strength. The tightly cropped perspective draws the viewer into an interior space whose forms seem simultaneously vulnerable and remarkably persistent.
For JChadima, cancer brought into sharp focus what he describes as the “currency of time”—the finite measure through which relationships, creativity, and lived experience acquire their greatest value. The work acknowledges the fear surrounding serious illness and mortality, as well as those, including members of the artist’s own family, whose lives have been lost to cancer. At the same time, it recognizes the sustaining presence of his family—his spouse, his daughter Sadie—along with friends, love, and creative purpose. These relationships became inseparable from the experience of perseverance embodied in the painting.
The title Resilience is therefore neither abstract nor symbolic in the conventional sense. It describes an ongoing act: the capacity to endure uncertainty without surrendering the desire to create, connect, and move forward. The organic forms appear to bend and compress, yet they continue to open toward light and colour.
Created during illness and viewed from the perspective of remission, Resilience ultimately transforms a private confrontation with mortality into a universal reflection on what it means to continue. Rather than presenting survival as triumph alone, JChadima gives visual form to something quieter and more complex—the fragile, persistent determination to value the time we are given and remain open to family, creativity, love, and life.

Interview by Karen Marin, Independent Editor Consulting Advisor for Essenencional and friend of the artist (Second part in French).
JChadima is an American painter and photographer living in Paris.
He developed his skills and creativity from a very young age: JChadima has been exhibiting and selling his work for a long time in the United States.
Born in the USA, JChadima studied and graduated from the University of Colorado. His unique style and creative vision were nurtured and built upon a solid foundation by some of the most influential American artists of the early to mid-century, and some of their former students. Some of his teachers were students of artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe first, but also Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams. They were directly involved and influential in JChadima's artistic roots.
Using her expertise in photography, JChadima developed the ability to observe details and draw inspiration from the world around her.
Whether directly from nature or still life, from current urban and environmental or historical influences, the bases of his paintings come directly from the impressions he draws from his photography.
A process of abstraction occurs by seeing beyond images and analyzing line, shape, shapes, colors and textures.
This work produces a highly stylized, graphic and colorful palette, and his works come to life...
