PEONY IN BLACK AND WHITE

Peony in Black and White represents JChadima’s exploration of the same flower through a deliberately monochromatic visual language. Stripped of colour, the peony becomes an investigation into light, shadow, line, tonal structure, and organic form. The absence of colour allows the underlying architecture of the flower to emerge with greater intensity, revealing the complex relationships between its overlapping petals, folds, contours, and internal spaces.

The composition is built around strong contrasts between deep blacks, intermediate greys, and luminous passages of white. These tonal shifts establish the volume of the petals while simultaneously flattening and fragmenting the botanical subject. Dark passages create weight and depth, while sharply illuminated areas act almost as drawing, tracing the edges and gestures of the flower across the picture plane.

JChadima’s close perspective transforms the peony from a recognizable botanical subject into an almost abstract field of organic structures. Individual petals overlap, dissolve, and reappear, creating a visual rhythm that moves between density and openness. The central flower structure becomes particularly significant, functioning as a point of visual concentration from which the surrounding forms expand outward.

The monochromatic palette is not simply an aesthetic reduction but a conceptual choice. By removing colour, JCHADIMA directs attention toward the fundamental visual components of the image: the weight of a shadow, the direction of a contour, the tension between positive and negative space, and the rhythm created by repeated organic forms. The flower is therefore experienced less as an object and more as a system of relationships.

At the centre of the work is the idea that observation becomes transformation. JCHADIMA does not seek to reproduce the peony literally; instead, the observed structure of nature becomes the starting point for a process of reduction, reinterpretation, and abstraction. What begins as a flower gradually becomes a composition of light and darkness, structure and movement.

Peony in Black and White can therefore be understood as both botanical observation and visual abstraction—a study in which the familiar is made unfamiliar through the removal of colour. The painting invites the viewer to look beyond the identity of the flower and discover the hidden geometry, rhythm, and visual energy contained within its natural form.
