About the artwork

PEONY IN ACID

Peony in Acid transforms the familiar beauty of the peony into an explosive exploration of colour, form, light, and perception.

In this vibrant oil painting, JChadima takes the recognizable structure of the peony and pushes it beyond naturalistic representation. Electric pinks, intense violets, acid greens, luminous yellows, reds, and deep blues replace the flower's natural palette, creating an almost surreal world of heightened colour and energy.

The enlarged bloom dominates the composition, its layered petals unfolding into bold, flowing shapes. Although the flower remains immediately recognizable, its form is deliberately simplified and transformed. Strong lines and contrasting colour fields reveal the underlying architecture of the petals, while the luminous cluster of stamens at the centre becomes a powerful focal point.

Peony in Acid developed from JChadima’s exploration of the same flower through a monochromatic, black-and-white study. The black-and-white version reduces the peony to light, shadow, line, tonal structure, and form, allowing the essential architecture of the flower to emerge. In the Acid version, that structure is released from tonal restraint and reimagined through an intense, expressive palette.

Together, the two interpretations reveal an important part of JChadima’s artistic process: observation becomes transformation. Rather than simply reproducing what is seen, the artist uses the structure of nature as a starting point from which colour, rhythm, emotion, and imagination can emerge.

The surrounding foliage becomes part of this transformation, dissolving into a dynamic field of interlocking shapes and unexpected colour relationships. The result is simultaneously botanical and abstract—a familiar flower experienced through a new visual language.

For JChadima, nature provides an endless vocabulary of shapes, patterns, colours, and textures. Peony in Acid reflects his desire to look beyond the surface of the natural world and reveal the visual energy hidden within it.

A familiar flower transformed into an explosion of colour, form, and perception.

“From the structure of nature, the energy of form and colour are reborn.”

About the artist Jchadima

Interview by Karen Marin, Independent Editor Consulting Advisor for Essenencional and friend of the artist (Second part in French).

JChadima is an American painter and photographer living in Paris.

He developed his skills and creativity from a very young age: JChadima has been exhibiting and selling his work for a long time in the United States.

Born in the USA, JChadima studied and graduated from the University of Colorado. His unique style and creative vision were nurtured and built upon a solid foundation by some of the most influential American artists of the early to mid-century, and some of their former students. Some of his teachers were students of artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe first, but also Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams. They were directly involved and influential in JChadima's artistic roots.

Using her expertise in photography, JChadima developed the ability to observe details and draw inspiration from the world around her.

Whether directly from nature or still life, from current urban and environmental or historical influences, the bases of his paintings come directly from the impressions he draws from his photography.

A process of abstraction occurs by seeing beyond images and analyzing line, shape, shapes, colors and textures.

This work produces a highly stylized, graphic and colorful palette, and his works come to life...
