PALISADE PEACH

In Palisade Peach, JChadima reconsiders the traditional still life through the radical enlargement of a summer peach. Associated with the orchards of Palisade, Colorado, the familiar fruit is brought into such proximity that its recognizable form begins to dissolve into an arrangement of colour, contour, and spatial tension. What begins as an ordinary seasonal subject becomes monumental.

Broad fields of saturated orange and yellows establish the fruit’s weight and ripeness, while vivid green at the margins intensifies its warmth. At the nucleus, folds of crimson, pink, and pale cream create a striking vertical passage through the composition. These interior forms introduce depth and movement, contrasting with the expansive rounded surfaces surrounding them. The eye is drawn inward, where colour and form become increasingly abstract.

The painting’s strength lies in this tension between recognition and abstraction. JChadima retains enough of the peach to preserve its physical and sensory identity, yet scale removes it from conventional still-life representation. Skin, flesh, shadow, and reflected light become independent fields of colour. The fruit can consequently be read both as an intimate object and as an abstract landscape.
