FREMONT PEAK

In Fremont Peak, JChadima transforms the mountainous terrain surrounding Cañon City and the Royal Gorge region into a study of abstraction and memory. Rising along the northeastern edge of the Royal Gorge within the Gorge Hills, Fremont Peak provides the geographical point of departure for a composition that extends beyond literal representation.

Overlapping formations of turquoise, violet, orange, yellow, ochre, and deep red establish depth through contour and scale rather than conventional perspective. Rounded foreground forms lead toward the distant mountain masses, while the expansive blue sky provides a quiet counterpoint to the chromatic intensity below.

The hues within JChadima’s palette become both structural and mnemonic, associated with particular memories, people, times, and sensory impressions from the past. Their placement and interaction evoke the rhythms of people and experiences remembered, giving the abstracted landscape an emotional geography deeply rooted in JChadima’s visual memory of the past.

Although the title identifies Fremont Peak as a specific location, JChadima’s abstraction releases the terrain from geographic specificity. Mountains become interlocking masses of colour and contour, suggesting a landform that might exist anywhere across the vast American West. The identifiable landmark thus becomes a broader expression of western scale, openness, and geological presence.

The work retains an autobiographical foundation. During childhood journeys along U.S. Highway 50 to visit family, the first view of Fremont Peak and the surrounding mountains marked a recurring moment of recognition and arrival. This memory remains embedded in the painting, informing its emotional character without becoming its narrative focus.

JChadima’s simplification of form and expressive use of colour also reflect his continuing engagement with the American modernist tradition of landscape painting, in which observed terrain becomes a point of departure for abstraction. Here, geography and memory converge: a familiar landmark is transformed into a more universal image of the American West and an enduring sense of recognition, arrival, and return.
