About the artwork
BARELY THERE
In Barely There, JChadima explores the threshold between presence and absence, reducing the visual experience to its most essential elements. Conceived in homage to Abstract Expressionist Agnes Martin and her radical commitment to restraint, the painting embraces a similarly pared-down vocabulary in which subtlety, repetition, and near-monochrome become vehicles for contemplation.
At first encounter, the work appears almost entirely white. Yet sustained observation reveals delicate fluctuations of ivory, cool grey, and muted tonal shifts moving quietly across the surface. Form is not declared but suggested. These nearly imperceptible variations ask the viewer to slow down and become attentive to distinctions that might otherwise remain unseen.
The deliberate reduction of colour and form is central to the work. By distilling the composition to its most elemental state, JChadima shifts attention away from conventional subject matter and toward perception itself. The apparent simplicity becomes increasingly complex: emptiness becomes presence, silence acquires weight, and the smallest variation assumes significance.
Like Martin’s meditative abstractions, Barely There is concerned less with representation than with an interior experience of harmony and stillness. Its restraint encourages a perception of order and near-perfection while suggesting something beyond the physical surface—a transcendent reality approached through quietness rather than spectacle.
The title Barely There captures this tension precisely. The painting exists at the edge of visibility, requiring the viewer to participate in its discovery. What initially appears empty gradually reveals itself as a field of subtle relationships between light, surface, tone, and space.
Ultimately, Barely There possesses an aura of silent dignity. Through radical reduction, JChadima creates a work in which almost nothing becomes deeply present—a contemplative space where quiet observation gives way to awareness, and where the act of looking becomes inseparable from the experience of the painting itself.

Interview by Karen Marin, Independent Editor Consulting Advisor for Essenencional and friend of the artist (Second part in French).
JChadima is an American painter and photographer living in Paris.
He developed his skills and creativity from a very young age: JChadima has been exhibiting and selling his work for a long time in the United States.
Born in the USA, JChadima studied and graduated from the University of Colorado. His unique style and creative vision were nurtured and built upon a solid foundation by some of the most influential American artists of the early to mid-century, and some of their former students. Some of his teachers were students of artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe first, but also Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams. They were directly involved and influential in JChadima's artistic roots.
Using her expertise in photography, JChadima developed the ability to observe details and draw inspiration from the world around her.
Whether directly from nature or still life, from current urban and environmental or historical influences, the bases of his paintings come directly from the impressions he draws from his photography.
A process of abstraction occurs by seeing beyond images and analyzing line, shape, shapes, colors and textures.
This work produces a highly stylized, graphic and colorful palette, and his works come to life...
