About the artist Karel Vereycken

Karel Vereycken was born in 1957 in Antwerp, Belgium. He graduated from the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels and trained in engraving at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, where he obtained a certificate of passage with distinction. Today, based in France, he concentrates on writing about art history, producing audio guides, and of course on watercolours and engravings. As a member of the Fédération nationale de l'estampe, he continues to perfect his skills in the Montreuil workshop of the Danish engraver Bo Halbirk. What drew him to the plastic arts is the way art makes visible those things and ideas that are not visible as such in the ordinary world, but which appear by a kind of magic in the mind of the viewer. It took him over twenty years to work out the difference between symbol and metaphor, the latter assembling unusual things through irony and paradox to let the viewer discover the meaning the painter intended. Recent awards include the Universal Genius Prize from the Effetto Arte Foundation in Milan in 2026 for his engraving Flemish Fisherman, the Mona Lisa Prize from Galerie Mona Lisa in Paris in 2025, and the Collectors Art Prize from Contemporary Art Curator Magazine.
