About the artwork

She

In this work, it all begins with a face-to-face encounter. A silent, almost suspended exchange, where the gaze becomes language. She doesn't just allow herself to be seen: she observes, she questions, she responds to anyone who dares to meet her eyes.

A hybrid figure, on the border of the real and the imaginary, she disturbs our bearings. Yet, behind this apparent otherness, a profound, familiar humanity is revealed. Her presence invites us to look beyond the surface, to recognize a part of ourselves in the unfamiliar.

The artist's intention is clear: to immerse the viewer in an intimate, direct, almost unsettling relationship. As in certain rare encounters with a work of art, time seems to slow down, to stretch. The moment becomes dense, charged with emotions and unspoken questions.

This face-to-face evokes that universal experience where one feels observed as much as one observes a suspended moment where an inexplicable connection is born. She then becomes a mirror, a passage, or perhaps an enigma, leaving everyone the freedom to project their own story onto it.

In this silent dialogue, one thing remains: she is other, and yet, she is deeply one of us.

About the artist Maryse Mulumba
