Anchorage

In Anchorage, the artist presents a hybrid figure, straddling the human body and myth. Crouching in a posture that directly evokes Aphrodite bathing, the creature withdraws into herself in a gesture that is both intimate and archaic. Her monumental headdress, resembling a seashell, acts as an organic extension of the body – a shelter, an origin, a memory.

The palette, composed of earthy tones mixed with shades of pink, blue, and yellow, establishes a subtle tension between matter and light. These colors, both soft and embodied, reinforce the sensory dimension of the work. The meticulous treatment of the belly folds, inspired by classical representations of Aphrodite, demonstrates a particular attention to the flesh as a place of transformation and truth.

Far from a simple quotation, Anchorage reinterprets traditional codes to create a space for contemporary reflection. The body is not idealized here, but inhabited, traversed by cycles, slow and sometimes imperceptible mutations. The work invites a return to sources, not as a retreat, but as a necessary movement to embrace change.

Through this silent, almost meditative figure, the artist evokes patience as a strength. Anchorage thus becomes an inner territory, where one learns to trust time, the body, and that which, within us, evolves silently.

About the artist Maryse Mulumba
